STEWART, James Douglas (1885-1965)
Croydon 1900; Islington 1906; CL Bermondsey 1927-1950
An untiring librarian of exceptional common sense he always seemed much more important than the libraries which he served. Active in the AAL and later a stalwart of the LA, he was made an Honorary Fellow of the latter in 1959. He edited the English catalogue of books from 1926 until 1941 and, after retirement, BUCOP. His earlier publications included The sheaf catalogue (1909); A tabulation of librarianship (1947); and the second and third revisions of his uncle's, J D Brown's, Subject classification (1914 and 1939).
